J.C. Phillipps Skype Visit

In kindergarten, we had an "author visit" via Skype today. We took part in the "Skype in the classroom" program (https://education.skype.com) to have J.C. Phillipps join us in the common kindergarten area to discuss her latest book, her methods of illustrating and even take us on a little tour of her house! Julie read one of her stories, and then answered questions while discussing/modeling how she uses collages to create her work. It was a great experience for the kids who were able to ask questions and watch J.C. as she created a bit of artwork right before their eyes! KD has been using J.C. as the focus of our author study, and we will now take a cue from her and use her techniques in a cross curricular activity tying to our thematic study of the ocean. We've also requested, and Mrs. Oeth has agreed, to have some of Julie's books ordered and in our LS library.

Oobleck!

We are celebrating Dr.Seuss' birthday by reading some of his best books! Yesterday we read the story of Bartholomew and the Oobbleck. This was a great story about a king who wanted new things to fall from the sky. With the help of his Royal Magicians, Oobleck fell down all over the Kingdom of Didd! Today we made our own Oobleck with Mrs. McCullen. Mrs. McCullen also read to us as our Guest Reader, a favorite of hers, The Cat Came Back. Check out these great pictures of our Oobleck! A HUGE thank you to Mrs. McCullen for leading this activity and providing each child with their own Oobleck to take home. WARNING!!!! YOUR CHILD"S OOBLECK IS INSIDE A GLADWARE CONTAINER ON TH E BOTTOM OF HIS?HER BACKPACK!

Ask me about the Y's guys! One Y is a bandit and steals the long e sound. We can find the bandit at the end of two syllable words. The one wearing glasses is in disguise. He pretends to be the long i sound in one syllable words. And regular Y he starts a word and make the y-y-y- sound like in our Phonics Dance.

Chinese New Year, Birthdays and Snow!

We have officially begun our Winter and Snow unit! This week we rotated through the K classrooms to do a variety of activities related to snow. We learned about Winter around the world with Mrs. Hoch, did some snow poetry with Mrs. Terwin, made paper snowflakes with Mrs. Paulson and made symmetrical pipe cleaner snowflakes with Mrs. Robeano. We also read a great story called Snowman at Night. We then began our own class version with paint, q-tips, cotton balls and so many creative ideas! Some KD Dragonflies created a scene with snowmen at night having a tea party, others were snowboarding and skiing! I can't wait to see how this class book turns out!

Happy Birthday, Thomas!

Today we celebrated Thomas' birthday with baseball and strawberry shortcake. Thank you for sharing with us! It was a sweet way to end our week.

It's the 100th Day

Today was a great day! We found 100 hiding pigs, made glasses, crowns and fruit loop necklaces. We built Solo cup towers with 100 cups and marshmallows structures made with 100 toothpicks and 100 marshmallows! We wrote about what we think we would do when we were 100 years old. It was fun too see what we might look like at this age thanks to a free app called Oldster. Thank you to all who volunteered today! The extra help made the day a breeze!!!

This week's pics

Writers' Workshop

In Writers' Workshop, students were asked to reflect a bit and look back on their first journal entries. They were asked to notice any changes in their writing and decide what they were doing well, how they improved, and now what they can be doing better. We decided on new writing goals going forward into this the second half of our school year.

We also introduced the idea of a writers' voice…

Architect Bean Came in to Share!

Mr. Bean, father of one KD Dragonfly and CA alumni, came in to share with the kindergarten classes. Mr. Bean happens to be an architect that has worked on several local restaurants and commercial properties. Mr. Bean explained the process of building and design. Several students asked Mr. Bean questions about blueprints and the planning process. We were able to make great connections as we have been talking about how homes are constructed. Thank you, Mr. Bean for a great visit! We very much appreciate the time you took out of your day to share with us all.

Computer renderings vs. the real thing, AMAZING!!

Our Homes Unit has Begun!

KD students created a glyph to share who lives in their home.

This week we began our house number project. Students were asked to chose different materials to decorate their house number. We will later decorate these houses and display them outside our classroom. The KD Dragonflies loved using these materials that were somewhat unconventional to decorate, lentils, tapioca pearls, wheat, clay, sand, etc.

Rock Candy, Ready!

Some of our KD Dragonflies were able to take home their rock candy this past Friday. It has been growing for weeks and we have been enjoying the sweet smells in our room. Students have been able to observe the changes that have been slowly occurring and also hypothesize why some rock candy grew faster than others. A few are still at school and may need a few more weeks to grow to a similar size as these ones pictured. Fingers crossed that they do, but we also talked about being flexible and understanding if in fact some don't quite make it. We also discussed that it was the process of making the candy that was fun and not necessarily the product at the end.
